How winning a design brief has given Barbara Fidler the opportunity to get hands-on in our design studio.
Earlier this year, London College of Fashion – part of the University of the Arts London (UAL) worked in conjunction with Clarks on an Industry project. The brief was to design an innovative concept product for Clarks Originals.
The process was reviewed by Clarks from research all the way through to concept and design. Barbara Fidler was one of the finalists brought in to discuss the creative thinking behind her ideas. Thinking outside the box, she took to the streets for inspiration, looking at cars and machines, taking a more abstract approach to the brief, which saw her win!
As the winner, Barbara had an opportunity to make elements of the very shoes she designed under the guidance of Clarks’ expert shoe makers and Barbara’s work will continue when she returns to university. In fact, the sneaker sole will be 3D printed just before the end of the internship. Having just finished her second year at UCL studying a BA in Footwear Design, it was an amazing opportunity for Barbara to put what she’s learnt into practice.
I’ve enjoyed making sneakers and I’ve already learnt so much from my first week at Clarks and I still have another week to go!
Barbara really enjoyed working at Clarks and has found the environment creative, collaborative, relaxed and inspiring. She says: “I’ve enjoyed making sneakers and I’ve already learnt so much from my first week at Clarks and I still have another week to go!” Barbara will be returning to university in September to complete her third year, but she’d love to return to Clarks after her degree is finished – and we’d love to have you back Barbara!
